About this programme item
Curated by Ernst van der Wal in collaboration with an associate professor at Stellenbosch University’s Visual Arts Department.
The show takes its title from the numerical representation of deep time, a geological timeframe commonly understood to span approximately 4.6 billion years, or 4.6 followed by nine zeros. It explores how deep time is referenced. whether conceptually, materially, or through artistic process, in contemporary visual and sonic art.
Participating artists are invited to respond to geological and philosophical interpretations of deep time. Deep time refers to cosmological and geological scales of time that extend far beyond the Anthropocene, offering fertile ground for creative engagement with notions of time and place.
