About this programme item

This exhibition brings together artists whose practices are shaped by close engagement with the natural environment. Rather than presenting nature as a backdrop or subject to be observed, these works emerge through attentive relationships with landscapes, plants, waterways, weather and ecological processes. Each artist responds to the environment as a living collaborator; one that influences not only what is made, but how it is made.

The Weight of Light invites us to reconsider the ways in which we understand the natural world. Plants and ecosystems are not passive elements waiting to be classified or represented, but active participants with their own histories, rhythms, and forms of agency. By bringing together observation, imagination and material experimentation, the participating artists challenge conventional boundaries between culture and nature, and between science and art. Working across a range of media, these creatives encourage us to slow down and pay attention to the often-overlooked relationships that shape our environment. Their works remind us that we exist within complex ecological networks rather than apart from them.
