Temperamental
Group show
Alexa Brews, Alia and Athene Azure Hage. Curated by Chloé de Villiers
The inherent vice of an artwork results in a permanence to be dismantled, enveloped and eroded by space and time. Temperamental displays this enactment of and with time and memory, which are compacted, parceled, and offered.
The show considers materiality and temporality in tandem, which are intertwined within the artist's practices. Alexa Brews, Alia and Athene Azure Hage allow their work to transcend ideas of permanence. Either catering to the material in its original form or working with it in a transmutational manner, the artists are intricately and empathetically engaged with the remnants and exchanges of the surface. The work promises to alter, allowing for past illusions to untangle and new ones to be acquired.
This exhibition celebrates the intrigue in what is not stable or guaranteed, highlighting the artist's practices of care within unpredictable processes. Befriending time, the temporal and materiality in the process of making. The sensitivity and forgiveness enacted by them honor the materials’ agency. We are left to engage with these ephemeral offerings created through the artist's processes of tending to and navigating loss, aging, familial connection, longing, and disrupted memory.
